Our Special Interest is "The Girl Child"
Here's the facts! In many third world countries the girl child often faces discrimination from the earliest stages of life through childhood and into adulthood. From a very young age she is considered the "girl child". As the "girl child" her status within a community is reflected in the denial of fundamental needs and rights. For example, in times of diminished food resources, girls and their mothers are often the last to be fed resulting in a diet low in calories and protein. An estimated 450 million adult women in underdeveloped countries are stunted as a result of childhood protein-energy malnutrition. Morever, within rural and urban areas, harmful attitudes and practices persist such as preference for sons, early marriage, rape, domestic abuse, incest, sexual exploitation, prostitution, child pornography, trafficking, and female genital mutilation.
The high rate of sexual abuse and violence experienced by Zambian girls and women also has a lethal price. The abuse fuels the HIV/AIDS epidemic and produces a strikingly higher prevalence among girls than boys. HIV/AIDS is 5 times higher among girls than boys because girls are often preyed upon by older men who are supposed to be their guardians or caretakers. Sexual violence and coercion of very young and vulnerable girls is fueled by the popular myth that sex with virgins cures AIDS. This is one of the reasons why the AIDS mortality rates among children and infants is rising.
The AIDS epidemic is producing a large number of orphans. Zambia's population is 11 million people and ten percent (1.1 million) are orphans of which two-thirds of that percentage are girls.
DOZIN's goal is to eradicate "the facts" by providing the girls with a positive nurturing environment, free of discrimination, violence and fear so that they are able to attain their goals and fulfill their God-ordained purpose on the earth.
